My journey began during a stressful time when I sought natural remedies to manage my emotions (anxiety and stress) and to improve my overall well-being. A friend handed me a small bottle of lavender essential oil, claiming it could calm my nerves. Skeptical but willing to try, I added a few drops to a diffuser that evening. The sense of smell of serene floral scent filled the room, and to my surprise, I felt a tangible sense of peace.
The transformative power of these oils inspired me to delve deep into their history, uses, and benefits. In this guide, I’ll share everything I’ve learned, from choosing the best essential oils to using them safely and effectively, and why Essential Oils are the so-called “Healing Power of essential oils”.

What Are The Best Essential Oils For Personal use?
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts from flowers, leaves, bark, or roots obtained through steam distillation or cold pressing. These oils capture the plant’s aromatic compounds, which hold the essence of its fragrance and beneficial properties.
Example:
Eucalyptus oil is known for its refreshing aroma and respiratory benefits, while chamomile offers calming effects.
For centuries, cultures around the world have utilized essential oils for spiritual rituals, medicinal purposes, and beauty treatments.
Today, people love essential oils because they can help with your body, feelings, and mind. To get the best oils, make sure they’re pure—no fake stuff or watered-down versions, because that makes them less helpful.
Important Note: For using the best essential oils
Always do Patch Testing! Test a diluted oil on a small area of skin before widespread use, to test for allergic reactions. The dilution guideline is;
Adults: 2-3% dilution (2-3 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil)
Children and sensitive skin: 1% dilution.
WARNING
- You must keep oils in dark, airtight bottles away from heat and sunlight to maintain their potency.
- Don’t apply undiluted oils directly to the skin.
- Avoid photosensitive oils like citrus when exposed to sunlight.
- Consult a healthcare provider if pregnant, nursing, or managing health conditions.
Difference Between Pure Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils
The key difference to understand betweenpure essential oilsandfragrance oilslies in their composition and use:
- Pure Essential Oils: These are 100% natural, extracted from plants, and retain their therapeutic properties. They are used in aromatherapy, skincare, and wellness due to their natural benefits.
- Fragrance Oils: These are synthetic or blended oils designed to mimic scents. They are not natural and lack the therapeutic benefits of essential oils, making them suitable mainly for perfumes, candles, or room sprays.

Impact Of Essential Oils On The Environment
It’s impossible to talk about the Best Essential Oils without considering their impact on the environment—that would be missing a big part of the story.
Using carrier oils with essential oils is not just about personal safety—it’s also about caring for our environment and stimulating sustainable habits. Think of essential oils as powerful plant helpers. Because they’re so concentrated, using too much or applying them directly to the skin can be harmful.
Using carrier oils is like adding water to super sour lemon juice—it makes it safe and nice to use! Carrier oils help us use essential oils gently and show respect for the plants they come from. They’re like quiet heroes that keep your skin and hair healthy, and when you mix them with essential oils, they make your self-care extra special!
Advantages And Disadvantages
It is also wise to understand that different oils come with both advantages and potential drawbacks, depending on the oil type and how it’s used. Let’s have a breakdown to understand better:
Advantages of Using Different Oils
Nutritional Benefits: Many carrier oils, like olive oil and almond oil, are rich in vitamins (A, D, E) and fatty acids that nourish and moisturize the skin.
Variety for Different Needs: Each oil has unique properties that cater to specific skin types or conditions. For example:
- Olive Oil: Deeply hydrating, ideal for dry or mature skin.
- Grapeseed Oil: Lightweight and perfect for oily or acne-prone skin.
Enhanced Essential Oil Absorption: Carrier oils help dilute essential oils and make them safe for skin application. They also enhance the absorption of essential oils into the skin.
Natural and Chemical-Free: High-quality carrier oils are natural, with no added chemicals, making them a safer option for sensitive skin.
Customizability: Using different oils allows for blending and tailoring skincare to individual preferences or needs.
Disadvantages of Using Different Oils
Allergic Reactions: Some oils (e.g., nut-based oils like almond oil) can trigger allergies in sensitive individuals. Always perform a patch test first.
Pore-Clogging: Certain oils, like coconut oil, are comedogenic and may clog pores, leading to acne, especially in oily or acne-prone skin.
Greasy Feel: Heavier oils, such as olive oil and avocado oil, can feel greasy and take longer to absorb, which might not be ideal for everyone.
Short Shelf Life: Natural oils can spoil or go rancid over time, especially if not stored properly.
Cost and Availability: High-quality, cold-pressed oils can be expensive or harder to find compared to synthetic alternatives.
Sensitivity to Heat or Light: Some oils, like grapeseed or olive oil, degrade when exposed to heat or sunlight, reducing their effectiveness.
How To Choose The Right Oil
Choosing the right oil depends on your skin type, preferences, and intended use. Testing small amounts and understanding each oil’s properties can help maximize their benefits while minimizing any potential drawbacks.
There are two main types of carrier oils, each with unique properties that cater to different needs.
The first type is Fixed Oils
Fixed oils are derived from the seeds, nuts, or kernels of plants through cold pressing or extraction. They are stable and rich in nutrients, making them ideal for skincare, massage, and essential oil dilution. Some popular examples include:
Olive Oil: A versatile and nutrient-rich oil extracted from olives, it’s packed with antioxidants and essential fatty acids. Olive oil is deeply moisturizing and soothing, making it ideal for dry or sensitive skin. It’s also commonly used in hair care for its nourishing properties.
Almond Oil: Lightweight and rich in vitamin E, almond oil is excellent for hydrating the skin without leaving a greasy residue. It’s especially beneficial for sensitive or irritated skin.
Coconut Oil: Known for its antibacterial and moisturizing properties, coconut oil is a popular choice for skincare and hair treatments. Fractionated coconut oil (a lighter version) is often used as a non-greasy carrier oil.
Avocado Oil: Packed with vitamins A, D, and E, avocado oil is deeply hydrating and ideal for mature or dry skin types.
The second type is Lightweight or Specialty Carrier Oils
These oils are often lighter in texture and absorb more quickly, making them excellent for blending essential oils without overpowering their scent. Examples include:-
Grapeseed Oil: A lightweight, fast-absorbing oil that’s perfect for oily or acne-prone skin. Its subtle texture makes it a popular choice in aromatherapy and massage.
Fractionated Coconut Oil: A refined version of coconut oil that stays liquid at room temperature and has a very light, non-greasy feel.
By choosing the right carrier oil, you can enhance your skincare or aromatherapy routine based on your specific needs and preferences.
Carrier oils are incredibly versatile and can be used on their own to provide amazing benefits for your skin, hair, and overall well-being.
Popular Carrier Oils
Let me share a few examples of some popular carrier oils and their unique advantages when used solo or in organic products:
- Coconut Oil: A lifesaver for dry skin, this rich oil deeply hydrates, leaving your skin soft, smooth, and with a subtle tropical scent.
- Sweet Almond Oil: Lightweight and gentle, it’s ideal for sensitive or irritated skin. It’s also an excellent natural makeup remover that leaves your skin feeling refreshed.
- Argan Oil: Known as “liquid gold,” it’s packed with Vitamin E and fatty acids, making it perfect for revitalizing dry hair, taming frizz, and adding a healthy shine.
Whether used alone or blended into organic products, carrier oils are simple yet powerful tools to enhance your beauty and self-care routine. I’ve often wondered why mixing organic carrier oils with organic essential oils is so important. The answer is simple yet powerful—it’s the perfect way to create a luxurious, personalized spa-like experience right at home.
Carrier oils play two essential roles in this combination:
- Dilution for Safety: Essential oils are incredibly potent and can cause irritation or sensitivity if applied directly to the skin. Carrier oils dilute them to a safe concentration, making them gentle enough for everyday use.
- Enhanced Effectiveness: Carrier oils don’t just dilute—they also help essential oils spread evenly and absorb into the skin more effectively, ensuring you reap all their therapeutic benefits.
By blending these oils, you create a harmonious balance that’s safe, effective, and tailored to your unique needs.
- Dilution for Safety: Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be too strong for direct application to the skin. Carrier oils dilute them to safe levels, preventing irritation or sensitivity.
- Enhanced Absorption: Carrier oils help deliver the therapeutic benefits of essential oils more effectively by spreading them evenly and aiding in skin absorption.
By combining these oils, you get the best of both worlds—gentle, skin-safe applications packed with the incredible properties of essential oils.
Example:
Pair jojoba oil (which mimics your skin’s natural oils) with lavender essential oil to create a calming, hydrating nighttime blend.
Combine grapeseed oil (a lightweight, non-greasy option) with peppermint essential oil for a refreshing massage oil that’s perfect for tired muscles.
Mix rosehip oil with a few drops of frankincense essential oil to craft an anti-aging facial serum that deeply nourishes and rejuvenates.
Pro Tip you seriously must take note of:
Always start with a small amount of essential oil—typically 1-2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil. This ensures it’s safe and not too overpowering. You don’t want to make a mistake with a large amount and have to discard it, talking from experience unfortunately but hey that is the only way to learn (the expensive why, so real, but will not change this learning experience)
Whether you’re pampering your skin, giving yourself a relaxing massage, or making DIY beauty products, carrier oils are a must-have. They make everything more nourishing, more luxurious, and just plain better. Give them a try—you’ll love the difference they make!
Organic Carrier Oils
Here are some of the best Organic Carrier Oils I found on doing my research and their benefits. Carrier oils are natural oils derived from the seeds, nuts, or fruits of plants. They are called “carrier” oils because they dilute essential oils, making them safe for skin use while also “carrying” the essential oil to your skin. Carrier oils are full of nourishing benefits on their own, and when combined with essential oils, they enhance the therapeutic properties of the blend. Here are some of the best organic carrier oils:
Jojoba Oil: Jojoba oil is a liquid wax that closely resembles the skin’s natural oils (sebum). Best for sensitive skin, dry skin, and acne-prone skin, and the benefits since it mimics your skin’s sebum, it balances oil production, making it great for both dry and oily skin. It is also non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores.
Grapeseed Oil: This is made from the seeds of grapes, it’s light and non-greasy, best for oily and acne-prone skin. Grapeseed oil is lightweight and absorbs quickly, making it great for people with oily skin. It helps regulate oil production and is rich in antioxidants, promoting healthy skin and reducing signs of aging.
Argan Oil: Derived from the nuts of the argan tree, native to Morocco, and best for anti-aging, dry skin, and hair. Argan oil is packed with essential fatty acids and vitamin E, making it excellent for moisturizing and reducing wrinkles. It’s also known for promoting healthy hair, reducing frizz, and protecting from environmental damage.
Did You Know?
Recently, research has also found Essential Oil’s fascinating effect on the Brain’s Limbic System with our senses of smell. This was such a “wow moment for me” that our sense of smell is directly linked to the brain’s limbic system, which governs emotions, memories, and behaviors.
When you inhale an essential oil, its molecules stimulate the olfactory receptors, triggering emotional and physiological responses. For example, lavender essential oil can evoke feelings of calmness, while citrus oils like lemon and bergamot can uplift your mood.
Studies show that certain scents can improve cognitive function, reduce stress, and even boost memory recall, making essential oils powerful tools for emotional wellness. I have a few of my blending recipes, using to wrap in between my two hands, breaking the molecules, and with both hands bring it to my nose and inhale deeply and out, and I feel so much more relaxed, more focused, and for sure uplifting my moods. Discovering essential oils is like taking a sensory journey around the world.
Each one tells a story through its scent—some transport you to a blooming lavender field, while others evoke the freshness of a citrus grove.
My journey with essential oils has been a personal exploration of nature’s most fragrant gifts. The best-smelling essential oils depend on personal preference, but some oils are universally loved for their captivating, versatile, and pleasant aromas. Here’s a list categorized by fragrance type to help you find the perfect scents:
My first encounter smelling lavender essential oil, I felt like I was standing in a sun-soaked field in Provence. Its calming, floral aroma instantly relaxed me, and it became my go-to for bedtime rituals. I remember rubbing a drop on my pillow and being amazed at how quickly it eased my restless nights. Citrus essential oils were my next love—lemon, orange, and grapefruit.
Each one has its personality. Lemon is sharp and invigorating, like a burst of sunshine on a rainy day. Sweet orange, with its warm, happy scent, reminds me of peeling oranges with my grandmother as a child. Grapefruit, a little zestier, became my midday pick-me-up, a quick sniff clearing my mental fog and boosting my energy.
When I discovered patchouli and cedarwood, I didn’t immediately fall in love. Their deep, earthy scents felt too strong at first. But as I started experimenting, I found they brought a grounding comfort, especially during times of stress or after a hard day at work, even a mom with its challenges being SUPER MOM.
I remember diffusing cedarwood during a chaotic week, and it felt like bringing a peaceful forest into my home. The other Essential oils like ylang ylang and frankincense introduced me to a more exotic world. Ylang-ylang’s sweet, almost intoxicating floral scent made me think of tropical nights, while frankincense felt ancient and sacred, like stepping into a quiet, candlelit temple. These oils made me realize how powerful scents can be in creating moods and memories. Fresh and “herbal” or “fresh and green, both terms convey a similar meaning but feel a bit more approachable and easy-going.
Example
“Peppermint and eucalyptus have a refreshing, herbal scent that feels clean and invigorating.” Peppermint and eucalyptus are now my go-to oils for a refreshing boost. Peppermint’s sharp, minty aroma is like a wake-up call, perfect for early mornings or when I need to refocus.
Eucalyptus reminds me of spa days, its clean, crisp scent opening up my senses and making me feel instantly refreshed. “The fresh, green aroma of rosemary always reminds me of a sunny garden.” The fresh, green aroma of rosemary always reminds me of a sunny garden because it’s so vibrant and full of life. It instantly brings to mind the feeling of brushing past a rosemary bush on a warm afternoon, the earthy, herbal scent filling the air. Something is grounding yet uplifting about it like the smell of nature waking up.
It makes me think of sunlit moments in the kitchen, snipping a sprig of rosemary to add to a dish, or sitting outside surrounded by fragrant plants. That crisp, green scent carries a sense of warmth and comfort, like stepping into a cozy, sun-drenched space where the simple beauty of nature takes center stage. It’s not just a smell—it’s a little memory of peace and joy wrapped in a fresh, leafy fragrance.
Okay, I think you getting the idea of it all. So, let’s explore some more of the blending Journey.
My Blending Journey
The Blending Journey you ask: What is a blending journey? Well, this is one of the most exciting parts of exploring essential oils is blending them. I remember creating my first blend—a mix of lavender, lemon, and peppermint. It was far from perfect, but it sparked a curiosity in me to keep experimenting.
Now, I have favorite combinations for everything—relaxation, energy, focus, or simply making my space smell amazing. I have also had blends of anointing oils, which smell so divine, and relaxing that latterly change the atmosphere from oppress to a lighter breathable atmosphere. You should try it; you won’t be disappointed.
Every essential oil has a unique personality and purpose, and smelling them for the first time feels like meeting an old friend for the first time. They’ve become more than just scents to me—they’re a way to connect with nature, elevate my mood, and craft little moments of joy in everyday life. Through these incredible essential oil scents and their personalities. Each one has its charm and a way of brightening our days in unique ways.
Essential oils are little gifts from nature, each with a unique way of lifting your spirits, calming your mind, or energizing your body. They’re like old friends—always there to brighten your day!
Blending the Best Essential Oils
Did you know that by blending essential oils correctly; you have a three (3) fragrant blend ratio? When I first started blending essential oils, I learned that it’s a bit like creating a piece of music or painting a picture. Every blend has layers of personality, and understanding the three fragrant notes—top, middle, and base—helps you craft something truly special.
Let me break it down in a friendly, personal way:
Top Note: The First Impression
Top notes are like the opening act of a concert—they grab your attention with their bright, fresh energy. These oils are the first scents you notice when you take a whiff of a blend. Think of the zingy cheerfulness of citrus oils like lemon or grapefruit. They’re light, airy, and uplifting, like a splash of sunshine on a cloudy day. I love how top notes can instantly brighten my mood. When I add a few drops of lemon oil to a blend, it’s like hitting the refresh button on my senses. They’re also perfect for creating blends that feel clean and energizing—great for mornings or when I need a pick-me-up.
Middle Note: The Heart of the Blend
Middle notes are the emotional core of your blend. They’re softer and warmer than the top notes, like a comforting hug. Oils like lavender or chamomile are perfect examples—they bring balance and harmony to a blend. For me, middle notes feel like the “story” of the blend. When I smell lavender in a mix, it takes me straight to a calm, serene moment, like lying in a quiet meadow. These oils linger a little longer than top notes, making them the perfect bridge between the lightness of the top and the richness of the base.
Base Note: The Depth and Soul
Base notes are the foundation of your blend. They’re deep, rich, and grounding, giving your blend of staying power. Oils like sandalwood or patchouli provide that sense of depth and calm, like the steady beat of a drum in a song. I think of base notes as the quiet anchor of a blend. When I add sandalwood to a mix, it feels like bringing the blend back down to earth. It’s the part of the scent that lingers, wrapping you in a warm, grounding embrace long after the lighter notes have faded.
Well, when you combine these notes, you’re essentially telling a fragrant story. The top notes make the first impression, drawing you in with their brightness. The middle notes follow, adding warmth and balance. Finally, the base notes settle in, leaving a lasting impression that feels grounding and complete. One of my favorite blends is lemon (top), lavender (middle), and sandalwood (base). The lemon wakes me up, the lavender soothes me, and the sandalwood makes me feel grounded and centered—it’s like a little journey for my senses every time I use it!
Blending oils is such a fun and creative process, and understanding these notes makes it easy to experiment and create something uniquely you. Here are some more ideas of using essential oils to your benefit lifestyle that I have discovered that work for me and so it can for you too.
Use diffusers or inhalers to fill a room with therapeutic scents. For example, diffuse lavender oil during meditation to enhance relaxation. You can also massage diluted essential oils onto the skin for targeted benefits or go and visit a massage therapist, such as eucalyptus oil for muscle relief. I love adding essential oils when I want to relax in a calm stress-free bath time environment. I add essential oils, and bath salts or mix with a carrier oil for a luxurious soak. For stress relief, try a blend of lavender and bergamot.
You can also create room sprays with water and your favorite oils. I am all for eco-friendly chemical-free by making cleaning solutions using lemon or tea tree oil. When I am busy working in my office or just reading a book for relaxing time, I use craft candles with uplifting blends like orange and clove. I have also started researching some more ideas for products to use like; candles Aromatherapy candles infused with sandalwood or rose oil, and Bath Bombs – Relaxing bombs made with chamomile and ylang-ylang.
I also discovered using organic products with essential oils for mood enhancement, and blending Roll-ons like frankincense and lavender can be used in different situations of life, happiness, sadness, grieving, and anger; you get what I am saying – “Days of our Lives”.
